Tasty Homemade Hamster Treats For the Holidays

Surprise your hamster with something delicious this holiday season with vet-reviewed homemade hamster treats perfect for stuffing stockings. The first is a fun play on a classic holiday dessert—fruitcake. The second of these homemade hamster treats could work for any occasion, and just might become a staple in your recipe book.

Butternut’s Fa La La La La Fruitcake

Hamster Treats

Ingredients:

  • 4 1-inch cubed pumpkin, sweet potato or butternut squash chunks
  • 1 1/2 oz. of plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1 handful of toasted rolled oats
  • 1 handful of unsalted, unseasoned walnuts, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 handful of unsalted, unseasoned pumpkin seeds
  • 1 small handful of chopped craisins
  • 1 small handful of Kaytee Fiesta Healthy Toppings Papaya Treats
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil

Supplies:

  • Baking sheet
  • Non-stick parchment paper
  • Mixing spoon
  • Spatula
  • Fork
  • Scooper

Yields: 8 fruitcakes

Suggested Serving Size: ½-1 fruitcake per hamster

Prep Time: 1 hour

Bake Time: Up to 40 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Bake the cubed pumpkin, sweet potato or butternut squash with the apple and pear chunks in an oven-safe pan for about 30-45 minutes, until soft. If needed, you can add a little water to help them soften.

3. Mix the yogurt, toasted oats, walnuts and craisins together.

4. Once the pumpkin, apple and pear chunks are soft, remove excess water and mash them together.

5. Combine the mashed fruit with your yogurt mixture, mixing it all together.

6. Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

7. Grease baking sheet with coconut oil.

8. Shape the cake mixture into little loaves or scoop into small balls with a small ice cream scooper, and place them on the baking sheet about a ½-inch apart from each other.

9. Bake the cakes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes.

10. Flip the cakes over and bake for another 5 minutes or until they are hard. (The total baking time may take up to 40 minutes depending on how well you dried the mashed fruits; be sure to cook the cakes long enough until they are no longer mushy or sticky.)

11. Let the cakes cool.

12. Top with Kaytee Fiesta Heathy Topping papaya treats and unseasoned, toasted pumpkin seeds.

    13. Finish off with a little dollop of non-fat Greek yogurt.

    Butternut’s Banana Treats

    Ingredients:

    • 1/6 of a banana
    • 1 1/2 oz. of plain non-fat Greek yogurt
    • 1 handful of toasted rolled oats
    • 1 handful of roasted, unsalted, unseasoned pecans, chopped
    • 1 handful of Peter’s Apple Slices
    • 1 small handful of dried raspberries or craisins (optional)
    • 1 tsp. coconut oil

    Supplies:

    • Baking sheet
    • Non-stick parchment paper
    • Mixing bowl
    • Spatula
    • Mixing spoon

    Yield: 8 banana hamster treats

    Suggested Serving Size: ½ - 1 treat per hamster

    Prep Time: 15 minutes

    Bake Time: 10 minutes

    Total Time: 25 minutes

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

    2. In a medium bowl, mix the banana, yogurt, toasted oats and chopped roasted pecans together.

    3. Chop up apple slices and add to mixture.

    4. Grease baking sheet with coconut oil.

    5. Shape into small balls and place on baking sheet.

    6. Bake for 10 minutes or until treats are hard.

    7. Let cool.

    8. Top with craisins.
