Shelter Stories: Dog That Was Days Away From Death Gets Saved

Fletcher found himself in a dire situation in a rural West Virginia shelter. The young, 2.5-year-old Hound mix was on the list to be euthanized. He was days away from death when Providence Animal Center, a lifesaving rescue organization in Pennsylvania, decided to give the dog a second chance.

“I saw Fletcher’s picture online, was told he was a good boy—that he really needed some help and his time was running out,” says Dayna Villa, director of operations for Providence Animal Center.

Before being pulled from the high-kill shelter, Fletcher was in a pretty rough state. “He was very confused about what was going on and he was very, very thin,” Villa explains.

Rescuers brought Fletcher up to the Delaware County adoption facility in the hopes of finding the spunky, fun-loving dog a new family. At his new temporary home, Fletcher gets to run outside and play, he’s given kisses by staff members and volunteers, and he’s received the nutrition and medical care that he deserves.

Villa says that Fletcher is full of life and loves to run and play. Without intervention from Providence, Fletcher would never have had the opportunity to experience the joy of running after a ball in the yard or enjoy endless love, attention, and affection on a regular basis. “He’s just a great, fun-loving dog,” says Villa.

Fletcher is still waiting for his forever family, but Villa says that Providence will continue to make his stay happy and comfortable. “In most shelters, and with most rescue groups, you’re going to find animals that are healthy—that are friendly,” she says. “There’s really no reason not to go the adoption route first.”
