Zucchini Crisps for Dogs
Zucchini is super low in calories and a great treat for dogs that are trying to lose a little weight. Both my dogs will eat them raw but, for some of their furry friends, convincing them that fresh vegetables are delicious can be a bit of a challenge.
This is usually because they do not smell very interesting so we need to make them a little more exciting. Sprinkling them with a bit of ‘fairy dust’ usually convert even the pickiest dog.
- 3 large zucchinis
- 1 egg white
- Freeze dried dog treats
Wash the zucchinis and slice them into rounds. I used a mandolin on the thickest setting but you can also cut them by hand with a kitchen knife. The key is to get the slices even thickness so they all come out perfectly crunchy.
Lay the slices between paper towels and lightly press on them. This draw out moisture so they will cook a bit faster.
Place the zucchini slices in a single layer on a sheet of baking paper. Brush with a little egg white, you don’t need to use a lot.
Grate the freeze dried dog treats over the zucchini slices (watch your fingers!)
Place in a dehydrator or pre-heated oven set to 155 degrees Fahrenheit for three-plus hours. Leave the oven door open an inch for air circulation.
Leave to cool then serve.
Preparation Note: Ovens vary so always watch the progress of the crisps as they cook. You might have to turn them halfway through.
The end product should be crisp zucchini slices. If they are soggy, put them back in the oven for further dehydration.
Storage: Keep in an airtight container with a clean kitchen towel and out of the sun. They will last for about two weeks but check every day for moisture.
