Golden Retriever Who Lost All 4 Legs Becomes Therapy Dog

Chi Chi lost all four of her legs as a result of injuries she suffered from the dog meat trade in South Korea, but she never lost her spirit. Now she’s putting that positive spirit of hers to good use as a therapy dog.

Chi Chi was found about several years ago in the trash outside of a butcher shop in South Korea. She was wrapped in plastic and her legs were bound tightly with wire. It’s believed she was destined for someone’s dinner plate when the butcher decided her meat wasn’t up to standards.

An animal rescue organization pulled her from the trash and took her to the vet where she had all four of her legs amputated. Shortly afterward, she was adopted by the Howell family in Phoenix, Arizona. Since then the 3-year-old Golden Retriever has learned to walk with custom prosthetics. She’s also grown to trust people “without any fear or risk to her well-being,” her new owner, Elizabeth Howell, told The Washington Post.

Chi Chi finished a therapy dog training course last month and regularly visits a veterans’ center, an assisted-living facility and special-needs students at an elementary school, the Post reports.

Despite everything she has been through, Chi Chi still has a lot of love to give and is able to inspire others through her therapy work.

“Somehow dogs can just reach a person in ways humans can’t,” Howell told the Post. “Is that compassion? Understanding? I don’t know. But it’s really special to be able to see. I can’t tell you how many people meet her and just start crying.”
