This homemade dog treats recipe features colorful frosting made with fresh fruit, vegetables and spices, so you can feel good about giving these “sweets” to your sweetie. Plus, they’re easy to make and can be stored for later use to keep the good times rolling.

If you want to play cupid and spoil your canine companion with some extra affection this Valentine’s Day (and don’t we all?), try your hand at these DIY dog treats and spread the love.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp. all-natural peanut butter
  • 1 tsp. salt

Frosting

  • ½ cup tapioca starch
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp. milk
  • 1 tbsp. blueberries
  • ½ cup of spinach
  • 1 can of beets
  • 1 tbsp. turmeric

Supplies

  • 1 blender
  • 7 mixing bowls: 5 small, 2 large
  • mixing spoons
  • 1 heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • 1 baking sheet with parchment paper
  • 1 rolling pin
  • 1 piping bag or plastic bag
  • 1 mortar and pestle (optional)

Place the hearts about 1-inch apart on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for about 8-10 minutes.

Remove the sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool for about 10 minutes before frosting.

Separate the mixture among 5 bowls. Follow steps for each:

1st Bowl: Purple
Put blueberries through a blender or mash with the mortar and pestle. Add the mixture to one bowl of frosting. Mix until blended, adding in tapioca starch to reach desired consistency.

Green Boil spinach and drain. Add spinach and 1 tbsp. of water into the blender. Blend until consistent, and then add the mixture to one bowl of frosting. Mix until blended, adding in tapioca starch to reach desired consistency.

Add 1 tbsp. of beet juice from the can to a bowl of frosting. Mix until blended, adding in tapioca starch to reach desired consistency.

Add turmeric into a bowl of frosting. Mix until blended, adding in tapioca starch to reach desired consistency.

Simply put the white frosting mixture in the bowl.

Freeze the frosting for 10 minutes.

Once the cookies are cooled, use a spoon or butter knife to spread 4 of the frostings evenly across each cookie, setting one frosting aside for decorations.

Put the cookies in the freezer for another 10 minutes.

Add the color frosting you’d like to use for the decorations into your piping bag or a plastic bag with a small corner cut off. Decorate the cookies with different words and designs. Some suggestions include paw prints, hearts, “Love” and “Luv U.”
