If you’re a parent of a rescue pet, we’re sure you hold the animal shelter or rescue organization where you met your furry family member close to your heart. And even if you haven’t adopted a pet before, it’s hard to ignore all the tireless work shelters and rescues across the country do to find vulnerable, often neglected animals forever homes. As we found out on Giving Tuesday, Chewy pet parents certainly take notice of their efforts—especially that of Brookhaven Animal Shelter.
To celebrate Giving Tuesday, we asked the Chewy Facebook community to tell us about a pet shelter or rescue they love. We then took those comments and turned them into thank-you cards that we sent to the shelters and rescues mentioned. But there was one organization that was deemed a fan favorite by the community: Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.
The animal shelter, located in Brookhaven, New York, received the most shout-outs—and, inspired by the community, we showered the adoptable dogs and cats there with some Chewy goodies! The special donation included a variety of pet supplies the shelter needed the most.
“We are overwhelmed and extremely thankful that the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center received the most shout-outs on Giving Tuesday,” says Ed Romaine, the town’s supervisor.
But just what has pet parents so obsessed with this particular animal shelter? Besides all of the adorable, adoptable dogs and cats in their care, Brookhaven Animal Shelter is also home to a few special programs unique to their organization.
“Our programs include teaching young people about the humane treatment of all animals, as well as the benefits of spay/neuter,” Romaine says. “We have programs for free spay and neuter, and are presently expanding our efforts in the area of feral cats with Trap Neuter Return (TNR). Every month we run specials for free or reduced adoptions of dogs and cats, maintaining communication via the internet, social media, media releases and on our Channel 18 cable TV channel to improve our adoption rates.”
December is a particularly excellent time to adopt a new family member from Brookhaven Animal Shelter, as the organization is celebrating the holiday season with a “Home for the Holidays” promotion, featuring free pet adoptions throughout the entire month.

“Most of our guests at the shelter leave healthier than when they arrived,” Romaine says of Brookhaven’s adoptable pets (they take in over 1,200 a year!).
“This is accomplished through good food, fun and play, all part of our approach to socialization,” explains Romaine, noting that pets can comfortably make themselves at home in their air-conditioned, recently renovated runs, and snuggly beds and pillows before finding their forever family.
“This gracious donation of toys, and comfortable beds and healthy food goes a long way,” Romaine adds.
But the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center isn’t the only incredible organization out there. Local shelters and rescues across the country are doing amazing work, and there’s no better time than the holiday season to thank them for all they do and aid their efforts.
Consider picking up an extra bag or few cans of dog or cat food and donating the grub to your local pet rescue. Maybe host a holiday bake sale to benefit your favorite animal organization. Many rescues even have wish lists where they specify exactly what they currently need, so don’t be shy about giving them a call.
