6 Ways to Keep Your Dog Warm and Cozy

The holidays are around the corner, and so is coat weather. When planning your winter wardrobe, don’t forget winter dog fashion to keep your pooch warm and stylish. They may have furry coats, but your cuddly companion needs protection and relief from the cold just like you do. “Some dogs are more reluctant to exercise in the cold weather,” says Dr. Stephanie Liff, Medical Director of Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Clinton Hill and Hell’s Kitchen. “It is important to keep your pet warm just as you would keep yourself warm,” Liff warns. Keep your winter dog cozy and active this winter with winter warming tips and dog fashion apparel clothing from Chewy.com.

1. Layer Up: Your furry friend is just as likely to get frostbite and hypothermia as their pet parents. It’s easy to protect your precious pooch from the icy cold chill of winter with animal clothing, such as dog coats and dog sweaters, to keep him cozy and up to date with dog fashion trends. Small dogs, and those with short hair, need extra help when winter brings chilly air. Your precious pup and older canines need extra help controlling body heat as well. “Imagine their fur coat is one layer of warmth. When you are in your warmest coats you should probably put a jacket on your dog as well,” says Liff.

2. Wipe Down Paws: During the winter months, your precious pets can pick up a number of toxic chemicals on their dog paws. Chemicals like antifreeze and de-icers contain chemicals that act as poisons when ingested. Antifreeze is especially dangerous because of its sweet taste. Wipe down your pet’s dog feet after walks to keep them warm and prevent them from ingesting chemicals that their dog paws may have touched. Try Burt’s Bees Multipurpose Wipes with Honey to gently clean and moisturize dog paws after a brisk winter walk.

3. Protect Paws with Booties: Ice and snow can ball up in between pet toes or up on dog feet causing discomfort. “The paws are especially sensitive to snow and ice melting treatments,” says Liff. She suggests all her clients wear boots during cold weather to, “prevent them from exposure to salt and other abrasive anti-slip materials that may be on the streets,” she said. For the perfect bootie for your winter dog try Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots. These super grippy slip on dog booties stay on paws, keeping them warm and preventing slipping.

4. Warming Pet Pillow Beds: Help your pup sleep through the coldest winter nights with a warming pet pillow bed. Chewy features several thermo-pet beds including the K&H Pet Products Ortho Thermo-Bed Ped Bed, Fleece. Two layers of orthopedic foam provide support and comfort. The unique dual thermostat maintains an even surface temperature between 12 and 15 degrees above the air temperature, and is removable for washing. If your pet loves their current pet bed, try the K&H Pet Products Microwavable Bed Warmer to keep canines cozy on chilly nights. It’s simple to use, and takes just minutes to warm in the microwave. The non-toxic warmer is safe, and stays warm for up to 12 hours inside your pet’s bed.

5. Wax On: Winter can be brutal on dog feet. During the winter paw pads are at risk for drying, cracking, trauma, frostbite and chemical burns. “I recommend the use of Musher’s Secret, a wax product that provides a barrier for the paw pads when applied to the paw,” said Liff. Musher’s Secret Paw Protection Natural Dog Wax provides ultimate protection for the bowwow who prefers not to wear animal clothing. It’s also 100% pure natural waxes and non-toxic.

6. Step Up Your Grooming Game: Now is not the time for a trim. Avoid cutting your dog’s hair in the winter, because they’ll need the full weight of their coat to keep them warm and prevent them from getting a dog cold. Though animal clothing is a great addition to a full coat on cold or rainy days, maintaining a good grooming regime will become more important as your pup’s hair grows. Make sure to brush your canine companion’s coat thoroughly to remove knots as matted hair is less efficient at keeping out the snow and cold rain. Try TropiClean Papaya Plus 2 in 1 shampoo to safely replenish your pet’s natural moisture and condition their coat for easy brushing.
