The spooky season is upon us! While donning your own get-up is great, it’s even better to include your pet in all the Halloween fun. Finding the ideal small dog costume means considering your pet’s preferences, says Kacie Hu, associate global sourcing manager and trend expert at Chewy in Dania Beach, Florida.
“If your dog enjoys wearing apparel and likes to show off, go big with a full body and headpiece costume,” she says.
Doggo’s not a ham? Then Hu advises going with a simple, lightweight small dog costume, like a dog sweater or shirt, and avoiding the extras.
How a particular costume will fit your dog also is key to finding the perfect look. Be sure to measure your dog's neck circumference, body length and chest girth. Then carefully check the size chart of the costume you’re considering.
From funny to scary, we’ve rounded up some of the most popular Halloween costumes that are perfect for small dogs.
Funny Small Dog Costumes
Seeing a dog in any one of these costumes will make Halloween revelers smile. Seeing a small dog breed in any one of these costumes will bring on hysterical laughter.
Small Dog Costume No. 1: Hotdog Dog Costume
Who says a frankfurter costume is limited to Dachshunds? Not us! Any small dog sporting Frisco's hotdog costume, adorned with a ketchup squiggle, is bound to get giggles from the adoring crowd. (Spoiler alert: The buns will bounce as he trots along!)
Dogs who generally don’t like costumes might do well with this one, according to pet parent reviews. One said it fits so well on the back of their dog that their pooch hardly knows when it’s on. Another pet parent suspects that their dog thought they only had an extra-plush harness on when wearing it.
Small Dog Costume No. 2: Superman Dog Costume
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s your Yorkie cracking up your neighbors when they picture him leaping tall buildings in a single bound. This one definitely earns a place among funny small dog costumes. It boasts wearability, too: The cape, chest piece and belt all have fabric ties, so they’re easy to secure without being too loose or too tight.
Small Dog Costume No. 3: Lobster Dog Costume
The buggy eyes. The jiggly legs. The antennae (which adjust so they will not fall in your pet’s eyes). Aside from being a riot, pet parents say this crustacean seems nice and cozy for their pets. Plus, one resourceful reviewer cooked up a post-Halloween use for this costume: making their dog the star of a summer crawfish boil!
Small Dog Costume No. 4: UPS Driver Dog Costume
Whether your dog loves or hates the UPS driver, this costume, with the authentic company logo, is bound to deliver laughs. Make sure to show off your yapper to your delivery person the next time they drop off a package. Your driver will surely get a kick out of it, as most people do. One purchaser reported their UPS-uniform-clad pet won a local costume contests.
Small Dog Costume No. 5: "Star Wars" Jedi Dog Costume

The jacket-style costume is easy to put on and take off your dog, and the sprinkles add an extra touch of whimsy. The cherry on top is that the costume comes with a hat featuring more icing, sprinkles and—you guessed it—a cherry. Some think this costume could pass as an ice cream cone; either way, it’s a scrumptious choice.
Small Dog Costume No. 7: Lion Dog Costume
This no-fuss costume will make your little buddy the King of Cuteness! It’s no secret that small dogs tend to have BIG personalities. This furry lion mane, which features an elastic drawstring toggle to fit comfortably around your dog’s neck, will let everyone know your pet has a real wild side.
Small Dog Costume No. 8: Disney's Snow White Dog Costume
Who’s the fairest of them all? Your pupper, of course! Officially licensed by Disney, this costume features a drawstring on the bow and necklace for a custom fit. You also can put your dog’s ears through the strings on the headpiece, an irresistible effect if you’re dressing, say, a Papillon. Though glittery, the fabric doesn’t shed glitter, a pet parent notes.
Scary Small Dog Costumes
Remember, we are dressing Corgis, Chihuahuas and Cairn Terriers here. No costume actually will be scary. But if your taste runs more spooky than sweet, here are a couple perfect picks.
Small Dog Costume No. 9: Bat Dog Costume
This doggy disguise is super simple and particularly great for warmer climates where you don’t want to put tons of clothing on your dog in October. The creepy-cool headpiece attaches with an adjustable toggle. Bonus: Many pet parents raved about how well this costume was made for the price.
Small Dog Costume No. 10: Skeleton Dog Costume
Your dog will have a ghoulishly good time prancing about in this comfortable hoodie. It has a leash hole for seamless Halloween-night walks.
“The glow in the dark skeleton [costume] is great for nighttime use,” Hu says. “Your pup will be visible in the dark while you’re out trick or treating.”
Halloween is one of the best times of the year, especially when you get to share the fun with your fur kids. Any one of these amazing costumes will get them in on the action without any toil or trouble.
